Its now a yea since your query. What did you end up going with? I have been very frustrated by the way in which scalability has remained Moodle's achilles heel. (Its great for having huge numbers of many different courses - eg Open University) but just cant cope with huge numbers of separate groups using a smnall number (eg 10-20) courses
What did you go with?
