Select email address from mdl_user - hashed/encrypted?

I'm writing an application which returns email address where userId = ...

In the database are values hashed/encrypted? Or will I be able to access via running a MySQL query against them.

I was wondering the same...
But I've just discovered that real users have a plain email address in field 'email'. So need to do anything...
