Thank you for your help...
I seem to have Moodle up and running, with email authentication and everything! I did this once before on a server right on my desk... I felt I had much more direct control over that setup. My latest installation is a new adventure-- on a distant server, over which I have much less specific control. But it seems to be all set!
On to more adventures with Moodle!
