we are looking to upgrade our Moodle in the summer. We are currently a Moodle 3.3. We were looking at the underlying OS to upgrade too, not just Moodle.
We have had issues in the past with speed - we used to be on Windows with MySQL (on Windows), currently we are on Ubuntu with MySQL (on Windows) we are on physical servers because we had a slowness on virtual.
Now obviously tech moves forward at the rate of knotts so any thoughts. Anybody on virtual servers care to comment on speed - is it all right now?
We were hoping to move back to Windows because we have more in house support for Windows than Ubuntu, but then I saw that bit in the documentation site https://docs.moodle.org/34/en/Windows_installation
which says Windows is not suitable for large sites because of PHP on Windows not supporting 64 bit integers. The author in the documentation also asks if the statement is still correct, so can anybody comment on Windows 64 bit and php? Are they a good gamble or would I just be making a hole for myself and Moodle to fall in.
Also we have seen that Moodle now supports Microsoft SQL, again we have more support for that than we do MySQL so were hoping to move to that - is anybody running on Microsoft SQL? Is it a good experience?
If anyone can share their experience regarding a largish, but busy site on Windows - as in would you choose it again, given what you know now then it would be much appreciated.
Thank you in anticipation.
