Hi,

a teacher at our University has the following use case:

He wants the students to name specific parts belonging to a topic. In his case, it's biology related. He wants the students to name 4 typical parts of a cell and provides 8 correct possibilities within the question. He does not want to create a MC question, because he wants the students to know the terms and not to select what presented possibility could be right.

He chose the embedded question type and created this question.

Please name  4 typical parts of a cell:
1. {1:SA:=Nucleus~%100%Mitochondrion~%100%Golgi apparatus~%100%Rough
ER~%100%Smooth ER~%100%Ribosome~%100%Lysosome~%100%Membrane}
2. {1:SA:=Nucleus~%100%Mitochondrion~%100%Golgi apparatus~%100%Rough
ER~%100%Smooth ER~%100%Ribosome~%100%Lysosome~%100%Membrane}
3. {1:SA:=Nucleus~%100%Mitochondrion~%100%Golgi apparatus~%100%Rough
ER~%100%Smooth ER~%100%Ribosome~%100%Lysosome~%100%Membrane}
4. {1:SA:=Nucleus~%100%Mitochondrion~%100%Golgi apparatus~%100%Rough
ER~%100%Smooth ER~%100%Ribosome~%100%Lysosome~%100%Membrane}

So, 4 gaps are displayed and if a students enters a correct term in one gap, he gets the remarks for this correct answer. However, the students quickly found out, that they could reuse one correct answer for all 4 gaps to get full score for this question.

So, my questions are:

  • Is there another question type that could realize this use case?
  • Is there a possibility that a check could be added to this question type (embedded cloze), that answers from other gaps cannot be reused as a correct answer?

I hope, the intention of the teacher and the problem is understandable how I presented it. If not, please feel free to ask.

Best, Kathrin

Hi Kathrin,

The gap fill or drag and drop can be set to work the way you want.

If you can install 3rd party plugins my  gapfill question type has a mode called no duplicates mode. The example I give is What are the olympic medals and the student is presented with three boxes. If they enter gold,gold,gold each answer will be displayed with a tick to indicate they are correct answers but they will only get one mark. You can see this documented here

https://docs.moodle.org/33/en/Gapfill_question_type#No_Duplicates_Mode

Here is the plugin

Hi Al and Marcus,

thanks for the hint to the plugin. I'll definitely test it and it sounds that it serves the need for our teacher's request. Yes

Best, Kathrin
