Allow students to choose a group

I have about 400 students. Now I want to divide them into 2 groups (based on what time they go to the class). I could do it manually, but it takes time. So, is there a way to let students choose a group?

One way I can think of would be to use enrolment key for groups. But the problem is students are already enrolled and have some grades. Can I unenrol them and let them enrol again?

Is there any other way?

We use the Group Choice Plugin which allows the students to pick a group.

We use this plugin quite a bit.

You can use Moodle built-in "Auto-create groups" feature to quickly create two groups.  However, this does not allow students to choose their groups.
