If by "free version of Moodle", you mean MoodleCloud, then I'm sad to say that HotPot is not available on that platform because 3rd-plugins are not allowed on the MoodleCloud.
thanks Gordon,
what would be the least effort fastest way for me trial hotpot within moodle?
I'm not sure. What do you mean by "trial"?
What are you short-term plans?
What are your long-term plans?
What experience do you have making HotPot activities?
What experience do you have using Moodle?
What experience do you have running a Moodle server?
Thanks for your reply Gordon,
I have made quite a few HP activities and I'm very impressed with its functionality, ease of use and speed of development. I'm looking for a simple way way of putting these activities online for my students.
I have no background in Moodle at all, and although I have a degree in computing, I don't have the time to become a Moodle sysadmin.
If anyone knows of a simple way to get HP online I'd be very interested to hear about it.
thanks
The simplest way to put Hot Potatoes exercises online is to upload the Hot Potatoes HTML files to a web server that anyone can access. Indeed, this was the original intention of the Hot Potatoes suite. This method is simple to implement, but you will not get any data on student scores.
If you do not have your own server space to upload files to, you can pay money to host them on hotpotatoes.net This service has its own LMS (Learning Management System), and will give you information about which students attempted which Hot Potatoes exercises.
If you have teacher access to a Moodle course, you can add the Hot Potatoes exercises in a several ways.
On a standard Moodle site, you can add the HTML files of a Hot Potatoes exercise as a Moodle File resource. You can also create a "chain" of several Hot Potatoes exercises using the Moodle Book activity. However, neither of these methods will give you information on student attempts at the exercises.
On a Moodle site that allows 3rd-party plugins, you may be able to arrange for the HotPot module to be installed. This module will allow you to add each Hot Potatoes exercise as a Moodle HotPot activity in a Moodle course. Alternatively, you can install the TaskChain activity, which allows a chain of Hot Potatoes exercises to be added as a single activity in a Moodle course. Both the HotPot activity and the TaskChain activity will give you a lot of data about student attempts, including statistics on how individual items in each question were answered.
If you wish to use the 3rd-party plugins, but you do NOT wish to be a Moodle sysadmin, then you need to arrange for someone else to do the admin for you. There are supposedly "free" sites that allow 3rd-party plugins - I notice that geronimo.com seems to have the HotPot module, but does not have the TaskChain module. The "free" sites, usually require you to let them show adverts to your students, and carry no guarantees about speed, bandwidth, or data security. Therefore, I would say the most reliable way to host your Hot Potatoes exercises on a Moodle site is to pay a Moodle Partner. This may also be your most expensive option
If you wish to experiment with the HotPot and TaskChain modules, you are welcome to use my research server using the access details below. However, please note that this site is not suitable for running your own classes, as it does not allow new users to register, and also it gets reset periodically.
Thanks for that Gordon, fantastic reply!
Can you please enrol the user (guestteacher) to course (Course Fullname 101) @ https://bateson.kochi-tech.ac.jp/30/
Hi Subhani,
I have enrolled the guestteacher in that course. Please feel free to experiment.
Regards,
Gordon
Thank you very much Gordon
