Outgoing mail config ISSUE

Whenever a user creates an account, the confirmation email is not received by the student and the error message is displayed:

Tried to send email but failed and also gateway timed out. I have checked the SMTP settings but to no avail.

What could be the issue? It's irritating. Please help.

The SMTP settings are wrong? You have a firewall between you and the mail server that's blocking you? The mail server is not configured to accept your mail? Something else?

With no information about your mail setup, it's very hard to help.

I just had the same problem. My solution was to create an account with Sendgrid which provides a SMTP service allowing up to 100 emails a day without charge. Setup was easy and once I updated the Moodle email config, my problem was solved.
I am using emails for password resets so the restriction for free usage is all I need.
