Hi fellow Moodlers,
After recently upgrading to 3.2, I noticed that users now have a new Forum preference, "Mark as read on notification". I understand that the default behavior for many years has always been to mark posts as read if an email notification is sent to the user, and that now the user just has the option to change the behavior.
My question is: now that this is a user preference, can we change the user default preference, i.e. the setting for new user accounts? We can already set the default setting for other preferences like "Email display", "Email digest type", "Forum auto-subscribe", and "Forum tracking" via Site administration > Users > Accounts > User default preferences (yourmoodle.com/admin/settings.php?section=userdefaultpreferences).
I hope I am not re-hashing an old discussion! I did find a related tracker issue, but couldn't find a forum post that specifically talked about giving administrators this option: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-58958
