CBM - a nightmare! HELP! :(

CBM - a nightmare! HELP! :(

Hi,

There is a quiz which is following CBM (Certainty based marking) and this is resulting in incorrect grades in the gradebook. I have updated the setting in the grades by choosing 'unlimited grades' but the change of setting effect is not applied. Is it because the quiz is already attempted and nothing can be changed now? What are my options? The tutor has set up this quiz as assessable and this is causing confusion now in gradebook for all students.

Thanks

Hi,

Does your server have the CBM Grade Summary plugin installed?

No. If I install it, would it solve the issue? Thanks

From the plugin description:

"If you want Moodle Grades to correspond to CB Accuracy (0-100%) for comparison with conventional accuracy rather than to the total of CBM marks (see https://docs.moodle.org/30/en/Using_certainty-based_marking ) then use the code modifications and plugin available at http://TMedwin.net/cbm . Otherwise Moodle Grades range up to 300% based simply on the total CBM marks and have a non-linear relation to conventional accuracy, "

Hello, what do you mean by the grades are incorrect - what do you feel is making them incorrect? Also are you aiming to turn CBM off?

No, we would like to use CBM but we want it to show out of 100% (instead of 300%) in the gradebook.

I installed that plugin but it did not change anything.

Is it possible to turn the CBM off? Will that solve the issue? Thanks

It's one of the Question behaviours so you could use a different behaviour? (I don't know how it would affect quizzes already in progress though)

I changed the behaviour to immediate feedback but nothing is changed to the attempts already made.

Nothing solved the issue. The plugin, the settings and now the behaviour.

What to do now?

Thanks

I've unfortunately only just seen this thread.

With the essential plugin for CBM ( https://docs.moodle.org/33/en/Using_certainty-based_marking ), information shown on staff and student reports for a specific quiz should be fine, even if the quiz attempts were before plugin installation.

However, grade-book summaries will not be correct for quiz attempts carried out BEFORE EITHER (1) setting 'unlimited grades' (so grades may go up to 300%), or (2) installing code to change things so that CBM grades use the more sophisticated CB Accuracy measure  (max 100%) instead of a simple average mark : see http://www.tmedwin.net/cbm .

NB By default, Moodle calculates its summary grades from the sum of marks on individual Qs. The retrospective 'regrading' of a quiz attempt after adjustments makes that built-in assumption and uses it to shortcut recomputation of grades. This results in errors if regrading is attempted with grades based on CBM accuracy, although these grades are otherwise intrinsically preferable. Therefore regrading should be avoided for CBM Accuracy grades [See http://www.tmedwin.net/cbm/moodle/download/  ]. I don't know how often this problem may actually arise for Moodle CBM users. It would be great if someone more familiar with the way Moodle code works could assist in devising a solution. At 73, I'm a bit old to try on my own!

Hi Tony,

If a regrade attempt has actually taken place on a quiz that has CBM enabled, is there a way to fix this? Unlimited Grades are off, it's only one specific quiz that after a regrade, students that scored 20/20 are now showing as scoring 60/20 (assuming the 300%) in their gradebooks, which has blown all 81 student results out of proportion, and screwed up the feedback and scores that are presented to the user in their gradebooks.

Appreciate the assistance.

Cheers,

Ray

The reports seen by students on their attempts should I think be OK. My recollection is that 'regrading' may not go back to basics enough to take proper account of quiz settings - even where in principle this is possible. So crude Moodle grades can end up improperly scaled or sometimes pretty meaningless. I don't know whether you can remove a particular quiz from showing in the gradebook. Otherwise, I doubt you can do much other than advise students how (not) to interpret what the Gradebook shows!
