I am not sure how Martin did it... but here is one way it can be done.

  1. Turn editing on your main page
  2. Add a Resource
  3. Name: Whatever,  Type of Resource: Web Link, put a space in  Summary
  4. Add the link to the course you want.
  5. Uncheck "Display this resource in a new popup window"
  6. Save Changes
Presto... Main Menu link to a course.
