Moodle plugins - developer course

Hi guys and gals,

I'm desperately looking for a Moodle developer course for plugins (beginners with basic programming skills). Ideally somewhere near my area (Austria), or otherwise online.

I found this, which sounds promising (http://www.moodlebites.com/mod/page/view.php?id=24546) but the site looks terrible and less than trustworthy - having said that, does anyone have experience with this?

Problem with that course, though, is that it's taking place too late this year (starting in August only).

Thanks for your recommendations! smile

Hi Anna,

The course is owned by HRDNZ, Moodle partners in NewZealand and run by Justin Hunt (Poodllguy - and all round good guy as well as experienced developer!)  and, although I haven't done it myself, it consistently gets great reviews from those who have. Certainly, as Moodle Partners, there should be no issue at all with trustworthiness.

Timing, though - or other suggestions - I can't help with at the moment, sorry.

Richard

Everything Richard has said plus more ...

The organisers HRDNZ have been around since the dawn of Moodletime and the people who teach the courses are very experienced. I just listened to their latest podcast (search for freemoodle or hrdnz).

Hello Anna

Well Richard and Marcus have answered your questions already here - thanks smile

But as the overall manager of MoodleBites courses, I am really interested in why you feel "the site looks terrible and less than trustworthy" ?

If you can point me to why you felt this, something specific perhaps(?), I would love to hear from you, because I'm really not sure what gave you that impression, and I would dearly love to improve if there is a basis for this.

You might not want to respond here (although I'm happy if you do), or please feel free to contact me via email: stuart[AT]hrdnz.com

If you can provide me with something tangible that helps us improve the site for new visitors we will give you $100 discount off your course fee - how does that sound ? smile

I have not read that book, but I know the author is hugely knowledgeable about Moodle and he has authored some very impressive Moodle plugins. Also his wife thinks it is the best book ever so it must be good.

That Moodlebites for Developers course is excellent and Justin Hunt really knows his stuff. He is an expert in the Moodle world and I really enjoyed the course. But Moodle is a very advanced system and the Moodle code is complex, so a beginner with only basic programming skills might struggle a bit in the beginning. And an inexperienced developer might find some of the exercises difficult.

Have you gone through the Moodle Developer Documentation website - https://docs.moodle.org/dev/? There really is a ton of information in there - more than you'll get in any course. Combine that with help you can get in this General developer forum you probably already have everything you need to get started in Moodle development.

There are also books like https://leanpub.com/moodle and some of the titles on https://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?id=7246 so there is a ton of information out there to help you.
