Improvement of workshop

In our institution we got a lot of request about a tool for doing self-assessment/peer review. We found the workshop activity, which seems to cover many user stories. We have decided to use the workshop activity and made some improvement on it.

We think that this activity got a lot of potential but the learning curve and the usability issue for the teacher work against it. We got a lot of request for this kind of needs but there is not a lot a people that use the workshop.

So a lot of our effort is targeting the learning curve issue.

1- Wizard

We want to guide the teacher in the configuration of this activity. We also want to put the many parameters into context. With that we think that a teacher that do not know how to use workshop could give it a try in a couple of minutes with the help of the wizard instead of giving up because he need a lot of time to figure out what to do with all the parameters.

2- Assignment of peers instead of submissions

During our brainstorming, we found it complicated to wait for the submission phase to associate the works. In addition, the interface was very confusing. We found it simpler to make these configurations from the beginning when the teacher creates the activity. This has greatly simplified the interface. In addition, this opens new possibilities as you will see further.

3- Allow assessment directly after submission

We found this tracker :

  - Workshop only allows one phase at a time

We apply some principles of this task into the sketch.

4- Allow assessment without submission

We found this tracker :

  - Allow Workshop to assess without submission

We apply some principles of this task into the sketch.

5- Use the evaluation methods of assign

To reduce the learning curve of the teacher we will add the evaluation methods of assign into workshop.

- Add a config to hide grading methods

  - In the sketch, we have hide comments and number of errors

- Rename accumulating grading for simple direct gradings

- Change the workshop to get the possibility of use advanced grading method of assign

- Migration script from rubric of workshop to rubric of advanced grading methods

- Delete rubric strategy of workshop

After that we will have that in workshop

- simple direct gradings (legacy workshop accumulating grading)

- Marking guide (of advanced grading method)

- Rubric (of advanced grading method)

6- Anonymization of reviewer and reviewee

We found it much simpler to put it in the interface than use the Advanced role override.

Also, we are thinking about other features :

- UX of the student

What do you think of that ?
