We've been looking at the new myoverview block with interest - we really like the concept of the timeline of activities that has been introduced. We've looked into our database at our institution to pull out some statistics on course enrolment and course information and can foresee two usability issues with this new component:
- Users with many enrolments will struggle to find their courses and have no way to search, order or hide courses from display in the block
Presently, when viewing your enrolled courses within the 'Courses' view, a user is able to see six enrolments per page and these are categorised by 'In progress', 'Future', 'Past'. For users with a large number of enrolments, navigation is incredibly manual - we suggest introducing filtering, searching and the ability to hide or mute a course from view
- Courses names are not always displayed well within the block and is especially problematic for long course names.
We've found that the longest course name in our database is 210 characters in length. As the myoverview block displays the course fullname, the 210 character course is often cut-off or causes a lot of wasted space within the block:
As such, we've lodged two tracker items:
- MDL-58579 - Allow searching / filtering of courses in myoverview
- MDL-58585 - Long course names are not display correct on myoverview block
I am posting here to see whether there is any support in the community for these enhancements?
