I accidentally ran "chmod -R 0777 moodledata" and now when I navigate to Site Administration I get HTTP Error 500.
Does anyone know how to restore the moodledata permissions to the correct settings?

If that's what you did then I very much doubt it's the cause of the Error 500. That would make it read/write by everyone and that should 'just work'.
The next step is to find the error in your web server's error log and establish what it's complaining about.
The only slight possibility is if you are running SeLinux (that would be on CentOS or one of its friends) which causes all sorts of weirdness.
Thanks...you could be right as it is intermittent now. I will check the logs.
Also it is sitting on Windows IIS.
