You didn't answer the question Rahul, but presented link to 10 years old thread about Apple file system. It is not helping at all as I myself love to see explanation of difference between link to the file directly and Create an alias/shortcut to the file.

Hello Dublin and Urpo- are either of you able to post a screenshot of where you see "link to a file directly or create a alias/shortcut"? (I don't have OneDrive for Business.)

Hello,
1. Choose a text
2. Click "make link" icon from the toolbar
3. In file picker select o365
4. Click some file
5. Now you can see all three options.
Re: Difference between link to the file directly and Create an alias/shortcut to the file?
I haven't been able to replicate all three of these settings together on my OneDrive, but I have been able in other places to get link to a file/make a copy and create an alias/shortcut (plus with 3.3 assignments, also 'Create an access controlled link')
I am going to speculate that Link to the file directly means exactly that -as with this option in Wikimedia, it will take you straight to the place where that file lives, in your case, to your OneDrive account, which would then imply any users would need access rights to it.
I speculate that 'make a shortcut/alias' is done within Moodle so there are no access issues, and of course, if you change the file in your OneDrive then it will change for all instances of the shortcut.
It would be useful if someone else with a OneDrive business account could actually test out both options to see
Re: Difference between link to the file directly and Create an alias/shortcut to the file?
Hi Mary - apologies for late response, new Academic Year about to start this Monday and we are very busy here.
We want to store big files on Dropbox could - but when selecting file there are 3 options and it's not clear how they work:
1 - "Make copy of the file" - this I presume just copy file from Dropbox to local Moodle depositort - WE DON'T WANT THIS!
2 - "Link to the file directly" - this I presume means that file stays on Dropbox and only link to the file will be located on Moodle? For some reason this option is not available only in Description ?
3 - "Create an alias/shortcut to the file" - this one is confusing and we are not sure what is a difference between this and number 2 (Link to file)? I presume file stays on Dropbox and link (shortcut) is added to Moodle ? As I said we dont want to copy files to Moodle, just link them.
Re: Difference between link to the file directly and Create an alias/shortcut to the file?
Also if I try to add same file "as Attachment" there are only 2 options instead of 3. As we dont want to copy files to Moodle (file size issue) we hope "Create an alias/shortcut" creates only links, am I right?

We have hundreds of animation files we would rather store them on Dropbox and link to Moodle. They wont be altered so no alias option is needed.
Re: Difference between link to the file directly and Create an alias/shortcut to the file?
I can confirm that the alias/shortcut does not copy the file to moodle so you won't need to worry about space.
I'd be interested to know how you are getting on with this as we are exploring it in our dev environment for our next upgrade (to 3.4)
