Feasibility Analysis of Moodle and LTI

Hi,

I am just starting with LTI 2.0. I read in the LTI documentation that full both-way REST based communication is possible between tool provider and tool consumer.

Can anyone please tell me whether these following things are feasible via LTI?

1. Upcoming deadlines in moodle should be synced using my external tool provider.

2. Course created in moodle should be passed on to the tool provider to be created in the tool provider.

3. Roster information from moodle should be synced with the tool provider roster list.

4. Assignment created in the tool provider should automatically get created in moodle or vice - a - versa.

Hi Omkar,

An LTI provider is a tool to be included as part of the consumer. It is not really for syncing of courses or assignments etc. For instance if an assignment is created in the tool provider, it will be only part of the tool provider, but the consumer can access it.

Could you go into more detail about some of your terms?

What do you mean by deadline? The deadline of the provided tool, or the assignments in the provided tool.
What do you mean by roster information?

Hi John,

I have an external web application for managing courses, assignments and participants. I want to integrate this external web application with moodle using LTI. The external web application will act as an LTI tool provider and moodle will act as an LTI consumer.

Deadlines are nothing but calendar events, like assignment completion deadline. Whenever I update a deadline for an assignment in my external web application, it should be automatically reflected in moodle for that particular assignment.

Roster information is the list of participants(students, TAs) enrolled under a course. Whenever a participant is added / deleted from a course, the participant must also be deleted from the external web application automatically.

I hope I am clear. I'm sorry for the confusion.

That's not really what LTI is about as I understand it.

What you are after is probably best dealt with using webservices: https://docs.moodle.org/32/en/Web_services

Yes, to second this, web services are what you will need if the syncing of assignments and courses and deadlines (and more specific features like that) is critical to your app. LTI providers are designed to exist as one tool as part of a course on the LTI consumer (generally speaking)

Ah I see what you mean.

It doesn't sound like LTI can do exactly what you might want. But it can achieve the same goal. It will sync roster information. It can't sync deadlines or courses or assignments. But it can give access to the courses and assignments in your web app.
