No, this is not possible. But you can add content using HTML in the site title.

I disagree, it could be possible, just a matter of working out the code and defining a block region. It is not trivial though.

Gareth, I undertand the question is about to add a block in the existing version.
Of course can be done but it is not in our roadmap to add a region in the header.
