Hello to the Moodle staff,
We use Moodle from september 2005, for 17.000 students, in the French University of Toulouse, and the French Numeric University of Law. So we use 2 servers bi-xeon 3,2 Ghz 4 Gb RAM, one for each university, in LAMP configuration.
They were calibrated for maxi 50 simultaneous uses of chat (after a discussion with Martin Dougiamas, Martin Langhoff, and Visvanath Ratnaweera).
The server for Toulouse is strictly reserved for this use, and we will have, on saturday the 26 of november, an exercise with 200 simultaneous users working together in a quizz.
Reading a lot of discussions in this forum, we put "Apache max client" (in httpd.conf) and "MySql max connections" (by mysqld restart --user=mysql --set-variable=max_connections=500&) to 500. At the same time, we saw a discussion than mentionned 120 simultaneous quizz users with a server 3 Ghz 2 Gb, can we extrapolate to 200 users for 4 Gb RAM ???
Finally, we test (with ab from Apache) the time for 500 access to the link of the quizz. the result is less than 2 seconds ...
Can we do other things, like modify Php variables, use Php accelerator, parameter Cache, ... all propositions are welcome ...
Thanks for all readers of this message, and double thanks for answers.
