I'd recommend checking out boost navigation fumbling plugin. We're planning on keeping Fordson using the core nav drawer but that plugin might do what you want.
We might add a few features in the future but we are waiting to see what our teachers need.
The other exciting possibility is the whole right side of the screen can be used for a right side nav drawer. We're thinking about that and what might be beneficial to put there.
