It might be overkill (I don't even get a receipt when I submit my credit card payment) but it could also be useful and even fun. The receipt could include positive feedback, colorful certificate-like authenticity, and the reassurance that many students desire. You guys have converted me to its usefulness 
As Sea said, it could all be optional which would make everyone happy (except the coders maybe, but who cares about them )
