I am in Site administration/Users/Permissions/User policies and am unable to change the Default role for all users. The only option is none.
My students cannot edit their profiles and I think this may be why.

Have you altered the Role options previously ?
Because it is a default capability for Students to be able to edit their Profile.
Do you understand how altering the default Role would affect everyone ?
I have looked at roles but cannot see how to make this particular item change.
Which item ?
Users can edit parts of their profile, but not others (e.g. User name).

They can't change anything and get the message: "Sorry, you cannot edit own profile"
