That makes sense to me, since it seems to be the change from Moodle 3.1.4. to .5 that surfaced the problem.
Looking at what happens in the database, the files with the spaces are being uploading in the user draft area on upload, properly, but when the page is saved, they are not being converted properly over into theme_adaptable filearea. While those without space get the new database entry with the proper component & filearea.
