I get why the assignment tool in 3.2 has this option (I mean I get what the thinking was), but we think it just adds complexity for our students that already find submitting assignments challenging. Plus which, we just like having re-submits to be a fresh submit.... so is there any way to hide the top button within the assignment tool? I can't seem to find an option. We just want "Add a new attempt".

Here the assignment is overdue and still the student can add a new attempt,
Any idea how I can edit the reopened assignment?
I agree. An option to remove the "Add a new attempt based on a previous submission" would be very useful. I have users who also find this confusing.

The current wording is definitely confusing students, having some control over this would be very useful.
Agreed! Sometimes teachers just want students to resubmit an assignment with a fresh submission and not have to edit the previous submission. If someone creates a Tracker for this, paste the link here.
Agree, and this is still in Moodle 3.3.
