Wondering if anyone like us thinks adding a response template to the online quiz would be a good development? We are currently forced to use quiz essay question as it has response template. This way we can add tables and format the design with headings to answer under. Quiz is not that great either if you have a scale (word) you wish to put on it as quiz only does a score then you need to put it in a category to get the scale you need. Plus although manual grading is good for quiz, assignment quick grading is faster plus you can add a rubric or marking guide too.
I don't understand your question Scott. The Essay question type has a response template and you are asking for a response template to the online quiz, which part of the quiz are you referring to?. What do you mean by "scale(word) to put on it". I am rather cautious of the Essay question type as for me a quiz is not well suited to writing something that I would think of as an essay (but it is nice that the option is there)
I didn't understand your last sentence, my guess is a request for advanced marking (e.g. rubrics) to be added to the quiz essay type which was hinted at when advanced grading was first introduced but was not taken any further, see here
My interest is because I maintain the BTEC advanced grading method for assignment submission.
Hi there. I moved this post earlier into the Assignment forum from the Quiz forum because I thought you were asking about a response template for an online text assignment, similar to the response template in the essay question of a quiz. If I have misunderstood you Scott, then please let me know and I will move it back again.
you are correct apologies for posting in the wrong place. I realized I had done that this morning.
Just to clarify. I want online assignment to have a response template. We set assignments and quite often want them to respond in a set format and under headings like: Title, Findings, Conclusion etc. In medicine we ask them to complete logbooks on patients. (these are more like a form that needs completing.) So we want to add the form to the online assignment.
We want them to complete them on small devices so file submission is not really suitable.
Our work round has been to use an essay question in quiz with a response template. This does work fine but has some major drawbacks:
- No marking guide or rubric available
- Quiz only scores in points and a scale cannot be added like: fail, conditional pass, pass, potential distinction (so we are forced to put the quiz in a category in gradebook to convert the score to a scale)
- using manual grading in quiz is not as easy as quick grading in assignment
Solution: use the php that is in the essay question that allows you to add a response template and add it to the online assignment options.
So I was wondering if others had the same sort of need for such a function in online assignment. I suppose the only thing might be this would add to the word count. But for us it would save a whole lot of hassle using quiz as we currently do.
Have you ever considered using the Database activity for this? Creating template views is built in. The layout can be fine tuned to work on small devices. A scale can be used but granted, no rubric or marking guide, although, if it is fairly short either one can be added as part of the template. The grading would still have to be manual, but it is fairly simple to do and you can easily go from one entry to the next a lot easier than you can using essays in quiz.
apologies for not being clear I hope that my clarification makes sense. We are also interested in extending advanced grading and hope to do some work on this, this year. We are currently thinking along the lines of copying and redesigning the layout and usability of the marking guide and Rubrics. Then we want to create new templates that will combine the best of both and also add check boxes and more form like marking templates. This is to use for face to face marking of practical medical exams. It would also help with more practical Btec qualifications where the assessors can complete forms to sign of they have seen students demonstrate skills in the work place. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the direction of things
Do they do BTECs in NZ?
They have certificates and diplomas that are assessed the same way
Perhaps you could explain exactly what you are trying to achieve and we could see if we know of a better way..
