I have understood that it's possible for students to enroll them self into a course by self enrollment. But I thougth it would be possible also that a student enroll himself at the site level as it for instance happens at the Lean Moodle MOOC.
How can this be managed?
Yes, just enable Email based self registration. This will allow them to register with the site and then they can enroll in courses.
