I am a big fan of the new default theme. Out of the box I think the layout is very appealing. There are some styling things or features I'd like to improve upon with any custom work but this is an awesome theme!
Here is a screenshot of some tinkering I did with the theme to see what it might look like with a teacher being able to upload a custom photo for the top header area background. It would work similarly to how Pioneer theme works in that a site admin can set a default image and height and then allow or not allow teachers to upload their own class photos for personalization.
