Columns are part of the Bootstrap grid and can't be modified because the width depends of screen size.
The text length depends of: font used, font weight and font size. Modifying these variables you can get the best results for your site.
Notice that a language different of English, mainly using non-latin characters like Russian, can increase the text length.
