Individual learning plans

Hi  I'm trying to set up my system so that individual users can create their own learning plan and select which competencies (from the overall course list) they would like to work on. how can I do this?

My ideal would be that there is a pre formatted form to fill in with questions about goal, evidencing and activities  but any guidance much appreciated as at the moment only the admin role can create own learning plan and populate it

Students don't even get the template listed and there is no 'create new plan' button on their own profile

There is, I understand, an ILP block you can add into your Moodle, at this download page. No guarantees on its usefulness, but you might want to try it. Be aware that this is only rated to v2.4 so you may add it in and find it is causing some problems with your Moodle. Of course, if you know someone who has the appropriate skill set, they may want to upgrade it for you. If they talk to the original developers, they may not mind it being taken over by someone else and be made available to other users.

Hello Rachel. I'm just moving your post to the Competencies forum so you can get more specialised help. According to the Learning plans documentation (quote)

  • Users with the capability to view their own draft learning plans have the ability to create a draft learning plan for themselves. A draft learning plan can be sent for approval to create an active learning plan from the draft. Note that this capability is not set for any of the default roles.

However,  I haven't personally tested this yet (I will, when I have time) but hopefully others with more experience in learning plans and competencies migh be able to advise.

Hi

I have worked that out and set it so they can view their own drafts but its not even offering them a button to do so so maybe its not working

Yup - now got it working - I wasn't adjusting the right profile since it is set to automatically place people as authenticated users on front page and I was adjusting the student profile.

Next question though - is it possible for the user to make commentary against each of the competencies.  I'd like the learning plan to be a bit more interactive rather than a list of competencies to complete - am i missing something or is it just the comments box?

Hi again. Thanks for the feedback - I have just added a note to the docs in Competencies FAQ about students creating learning plans.

I don't know more about users making commentaries against each of the competencies sorry; let's see what others suggest.

Thank you for the note, I was searching precisely for this feature.

One question though: is it possible to add the "Add new learning plan button" to the student's dashboard, within the "Learning Plans" block? For my students it is quite complicated to go to "View profile"/ "Miscellaneous"/ "Learning plans".

Hi,

I am interested to know if you were able to get this solution working?  I have tweaked my "student" permissions in my 3.1.2 install so that they can view learning plan templates as well as create their own learning plans. I am interested in allowing a student to "enroll" in an existing learning plan template, but can't figure out how to make that work.  Currently, my student can see the templates, but the only action options are below:
learning plan template action options for a student

Even if I give the student role permission to "manage learning plan templates" (which I would be loathe to do on a real system), they do not have an option to enroll in a learning plan template (or basically create their own learning plan from a learning plan template).

We need to have a self-sustaining workflow for a professional development environment. So, how can I set up my system so that a student can review learning plan templates and select/instantiate/enroll in a pre-designed learning plan on their own? Or alternatively, could a course that conducts a survey to understand the learner's goals subsequently auto-enroll a learner in the best learning plan?

Advice/guidance is appreciated. smile

Hi Debbie,

Were you able to find a solution to this?  I am looking to do something similar with the permissions, where students would be able to enroll themselves in a learning plan but not have the full capability that comes with "manage learning plan templates".

I too would be interested in this functionality so students can enrol in any learning plan.

Have you got any further with this?

Hello Rachel,

"Now got it working" - does that mean you succeeded to authorize students to add competencies to their own learning plans? How did you do that please? I got only to the point where they are able to create individual learning plans, but can't find a way to add competencies to that.

Thank you.

Ah, it's OK, it works. It was a capabilities issue too.
