Can I find a plugin or something else to change the appearance of course categories?

I mean instead of displaying categories as links above each other, display them in grid or blocks or any other format.

Please advice me on some examples doing that.

note that I am talking about appearance of categories not courses (i.e course categories formats not course formats).
