I've recently found out that mod_php is deprecated ( https://wiki.apache.org/httpd/php ) and the preferred 2.3 way is to use proxy_fcgi and php-fpm. I've been converting site to this, and moodle seems to be a logical candidate (among other things caching with opcache shared across all processes).
This works in limited testing, but I'm no longer able to get mod_shib based authentication to work.
The error message indicates that moodle cannot see the environmental variables mod_shib sets.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
