Thank you for the information. A question please, why are you using a version of the theme only intended for Moodle 2.8? - please look in the readme file for this restriction (https://github.com/gjb2048/moodle-theme_essential/blob/MOODLE_28/README.txt#L91-L94).
You probably need to delete this: https://github.com/gjb2048/moodle-theme_essential/blob/MOODLE_28/renderers/core_renderer.php#L262-L264
