V3.1.1 - New settings - Recycle bin - doesn't complete

Hello,

I installed V3.1 (And now V3.1.1) and got to the 'New Settings' page (upgradesettings.php) during the upgrade process. The new settings are for the recycle bin and I'd like to just accept the defaults and save. When I click save the page is reloaded, if I make any changes the page is again reloaded the settings reset to defaults.

Users are able to use the site fine however I'm not able to get to any admin page as I'm redirected to the above page. I've enabled debugged but no errors are shown. I've also checked the web server log but I can only make out the page loads and no errors.

I'm running Windows Server with IIS 7.

Hi Rob,

Sorry that no one with a little more knowledge about this has jumped in, but I'll try. The only thing I can think of right at the moment is to check and see if you have anything about the recycle bin in your data base.

Hopefully, you have phpMyAdmin. If so, look in your Moodle database for the mdl_config_plugins table. Click on the Search tab, change the operator to LIKE %...% for the plugin field, put recycle in for the value, then click go. You should get six results, version, coursebinenable, coursebinexpiry, categorybinenable, categoryginexpirty, and autohide.

You can also look in the mdl_config_log table. Search the plugin field with the same settings as above. You should see something about each thing listed above, except for the version. IF Moodle has actually been saving your changes there should be duplicate items listed and there should be entries in the oldvalue column for each setting you tried changing.

Thank you for your help. I don't have phpmyadmin but I do have SQL Workbench. Moodle and this workbench are all new to me (Put in place before my time) so sorry if I'm not using it correctly. After a bit of messing I think I've found what your after.

Doesn't look like its saving then does it? Can I set the defaults in the mdl_config_plugin table to stop the upgrade settings trying to run? Or do I need to tell it somewhere not to run the upgradesettings.php?

I am having almost the same issue - but with 2 settings from the quiz module after a 2.5->3.0 upgrade.

Hi Rob,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you today. I'm glad to see that you got it all sorted out, but just to let you know, yes, you were looking at the correct tables and you were right it was not saving the data, hence the NULL value in all the oldvalue locations.

Personally, I would start by forcing Debugging on in the config.php file (see Section 7 in config-dist.php and copy the required lines over). 

The chances are that an error is occurring but you are not seeing it. With debugging on you may see an error but you might have to check your web server's error log.

After enabling debug I tried to purge cache. The page exploded with warnings about not being able to delete files. After fixing read/write permissions on the cache directory, I was able to purge the cache, and the settings problem is now gone smile

Fantastic all sorted after manually deleting the cache, all new cache files have been made with the correct permissions.

Thank you, I have commented on MDL-54876 with your solution.

Still I will leave the issue open because we do not know yet how these files with wrong permissions appeared and if it can be prevented/analysed on moodle side.
