One of my users is using "social format" for his course, and when he goes there and turns on editing mode, none of the popup menus show up at all, so there's no way to create assignments. Is there another way to create assignments in a social format course?
Found the problem. You apparently *must* enable the "social activities" block in the social format courses if you want to create assignments. This could be perceived as pretty horrible for two reasons:
1. it forces the user to enable a block they might not otherwise enable.
2. it's unintuitive, in that there are (at least) large camps of folks who don't view assignments as "social activities".
Anyway, I wouldn't call the issue necessarily "fixed", but that's the workaround

You could look at it in another way...
The social activities block IS enabled by default in every course based on the social format.
This unintuitiveness at least has the advantage that it makes teachers rethink assignments to be more like social activities. This is social constructionist Moodle after all.
And if that doesn't suffice...
you can always change the text in /lang/en/block_social_activities.php to something that is more in line with your educational practices. This is open source Moodle after all.
