Create groups using MNET enrolments

We have set up MNET in a Moodle 3.0.1 site (site 1) so  it allows users from another Moodle site (site 2), which runs version 2.7, to be authenticated and enrolled in  courses in site 1. The enrolment of those users is done using the MNET remote enrolment client in site 2. Until here everything works fine.

The issue now is that we would like for the admin (or teachers, either way is fine) in site 2 to be able to also group their users in site 1, not just enroll them. I don't see a way of doing this, I've searched online without much success. It's possible for an admin on site 1 to group those users coming from site 2, but we'd like to let the admin/teachers in site 2 to do that themselves.

Is this even possible? If so, how can we do this? Right now when users from site 2 authenticate in site 1  they get a student role by default, so for the teachers we need to manually change their role to teacher. Ideally we'd want these teachers to put their users (who come from site 2 as well) in groups.
