Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS > MULTILANG

by Federica Marra -

Hi all,
I posted yesterday in the closed forum, hope it is ok to post again here.

First, thanks for this theme! Is pretty amazing and very helpful for us! smile

I read other users had problems with the multilanguage filter in the marketing spots and footer.

I encountered the same problem with the multilang in the Navbar Tool Menus.
I wrote the code as:

<span lang="en" class="multilang">English text</span><span lang="fr" class="multilang">Text in French </span>|http://google.co.uk|Record Screen
<span lang="en" class="multilang">English text</span><span lang="fr" class="multilang">Text in French </span>|http://google.co.uk|ThinkStock

But I think it is not supported by the theme. Either the multilang 2 plugin doesn't solve the issue.

Do you think you might be able to fix the issue in the short term? smile

Thanks!

Hi Fernando, the Adaptable is amazing, and I'm trying to move BCU to Adapatable. I see the the new version of adaptable now supports multilang in marketing and footer blocks. That's really great!  But I run into a multilang problem in header menus. It doesn't work. I aslo try to use my multilang menus in Theme settings > Custom menu items to display in the navbar, however it doesn't display on the homepage when you first open the site, but will appear when you click a course and then return to homepage. How to solve this multilang problem, wherever in hearder menus or navbar menus?

Many thanks.

PS: My moodle is 2.9.6, adaptable is 1.2.2

Thanks for using Adaptable in your moodle project.

This is a known issue and still no solved. The menus are not rendering the selected language even using the moodle default structure.

I can't give you and estimated time but we'll publish soon a new version and don't think  will be solved.

Hi,

I have never had any problems with setting different languages in the menu

Can I ask what format you are using to add the menu items,

for example...

Title | URL | Alt | Lang

Italiano | http.google.it | Google | it

Add the code to a Tools Menu.

Found a workaround:

- Add the menu code to the custom moodle menu (the default)

- Enable the Moodle Custom Menu in:

Site administration > Appearance > Themes > Adaptable > Navbar Tools Menu > Disable Moodle Custom Menu

I've tested your menu code and works well.

Yes, it works BUT only when you log in or click a course. However, the multilang menus will not display in the navbar on the frontpage when a new visit comes to the site (e.g. open the site in another browser). It's a strange problem. Or some configuration I missed ?

Thanks.

Hi Hongllang,

Thanks...I have just visited your site and see that you do not have a Language menu visible on the front page so that I can change language. However Frontpage must be picking up the language set on my default setting of my computer as I saw all the frontpage in English. So as far as I am concerned it is working OK.

That said, I can see that your Moodle site is set to use other languages, meaning you have EN and ZH-CN language packs installed on your site as I can swap from English to Chinese by adding the ?lang=zh-cn or ?lang=en after the site url.

Either that or your Moodle site default is set to English and not Chinese? Which may be the problem?

Just guessing.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your reply. The multilang menus work on the BCU, as you see in my site.  I haven't changed my theme into Adaptable yet, just tested on a internal site and then run into this small problem.  As  Fernando said, this is a bug in Adaptable. Hope it will be fixed in the near future.

I asked this in the old thread but didn't get a response, so I'm hoping it's okay to ask it again. How can I create a child theme based on Adaptable? I need a separate style sheet for each of my courses. If a child theme can't be created, is there another way for each course to have an extra style sheet of its own?

You could try creating a minimalist child theme that contains:

firstchild/
    lang/
        en/
            theme_firstchild.php
config.php
version.php

pix/
favicon.ico

config.php

<?php
global $PAGE;
if ($PAGE->pagetype == 'site-index') {
    $regions = array('side-post', 'middle', 'frnt-footer', 'frnt-market-a', 'frnt-market-b', 'frnt-market-c', 'frnt-market-d',
        'frnt-market-e', 'frnt-market-f', 'frnt-market-g', 'frnt-market-h', 'frnt-market-i', 'frnt-market-j', 'frnt-market-k',
        'frnt-market-l', 'frnt-market-m', 'frnt-market-n', 'frnt-market-o', 'frnt-market-p', 'frnt-market-q',
        'frnt-market-r', 'frnt-market-s', 'frnt-market-t');
} else {
    $regions = array('side-post');
}

$THEME->name = 'firstchild';

$THEME->doctype = 'html5';

$THEME->parents = array('adaptable', 'bootstrapbase');

$THEME->supportscssoptimisation = false;

$THEME->yuicssmodules = array();

$THEME->editor_sheets = array();

$THEME->enable_dock = true;

$THEME->rendererfactory = 'theme_overridden_renderer_factory';

And see what happens?

Cheers

I also found some old code which I wish was not there as I feel it does nothing but add to the clutter.

Perhaps I should offer to do a clean up? LOL

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS

Picture of Plugin developers Picture of Testers

I'm working in this feature from almost the beginning. But Adaptable is a complex theme and create a child is a heavy task.

The Mary's approach is good but needs more work due some libs and functions.

Another approach could be creating a config.php with a CSS file with the colours you want to change and add it to $THEME->sheets = array()

In reply to Fernando Acedo

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS

by Kimber Warden -

Fernando, are you saying it would be enough to create a child theme with a config.php and a CSS file? Or are you suggesting I add an additional CSS file to the existing Adaptable theme? I can add another CSS file to the existing theme, but how would I target individual courses with it? For example, I would need something like:

#Algebra1 h2 {

  color: blue;

}

#Geometry h2 {

  color: green;

}

Alternately, is there a way to apply a CSS file by including it somewhere in the body of a course?

I really want to use this beautiful theme, but I also really need custom CSS (and occasionally javascript) in each individual course. It would be wonderful to figure out a way to do both.

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS

by Fernando Acedo -
Picture of Plugin developers Picture of Testers

The main problem to create a child theme for Adaptable are the layout settings. That's the reason of the errors shown.

In your case, if you want to keep the same layout and only need to change the colours then you can create a CSS file with all the colours you want to change and create a child theme (following the structure Mary indicated) adding this file to SHEETS array in config.php.

It is just a thought but I think could work.

The main task is to find all the variables used by Adaptable and you want to change like maincolor, backcolor, etc. because they are separated in all the CSS files. This is inherited from BCU and it is a bit messy but mainly are located in the right file. So all the blocks classes are located in the blocks.css file but some could be located in adaptable.css.

Try it and let me know the result.

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS

by Mary Evans -
Picture of Core developers Picture of Documentation writers Picture of Peer reviewers Picture of Plugin developers Picture of Testers

OK...I have cleaned up all the errors regarding notices for undefined variables in adaptable/layout/includes/ footer.php and  header.php.

So the child theme "firstchild" I made, and added to my Moodle 3.0.3 test site, now looks like Adaptable and seems to be working OK.

I'm tempted to make some changes to the Layout files and bring them up-to-date and remove the code which was depreciated in 2.9 when I updated Bootstrapbase and Clean theme layouts in MDL-48160.

What I mean is that since you are using Bootstrapbase as a parent theme you may as well use the layout CSS as well rather than old legacy CSS that may end up being removed in the next Moodle version.

Also I am wondering if it would be possible to add a set of colour settings to a child theme that works off the ones in the parent theme?

I have added a Custom CSS box only so far and that is just so the child theme Admin can modify colours if need be.

Actually Adaptable is not as complicated as I first thought, it's just that the methods employed in the coding is different than I am used to.

So far I am enjoying the theme smile

Thanks

Mary

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS

Hi,

We are looking at using Adaptable as our theme for when we move to Moodle 3 this summer. We are currently working on the look of the theme and the various options that it offers.

Is there an easy way of saving out a configuration file at certain points so we don't lose any work we've done? The idea is that if we change something that we are not happy with, we can restore the previous settings.

Really impressed with the theme and thank you for all your hard work.

Personally I export/import the database but it could be difficult depending the server access.

Try this plugin: https://moodle.org/plugins/local_flavours

It backups the theme and its configuration and you can restore in another site.

Do not install Adaptable, the plugin will do it for you. Just install Flavours and restore the file.

Hi,

I just upgraded my site from Moodle 3.0.4 to 3.1 and now the header image is missing from my site. When I go to the Header option under the Adaptable theme all I see under the Header header is:

Cannot read file. Either the file does not exist or there is a permission problem.

The usual settings and option fields are not displayed.

When I right click to get the image URL it is http ://astenjohnson.training/pluginfile.php/1/theme_adaptable/logo/1464054779/logo_my_AJ_career_LMS%20251x100.png

Any help would be appreciated as it will be used tomorrow (June 24) at 8am EST.

Thanks in advance,

Looks like the upgrade procedure used  is not correct and not an Adaptable issue. In the last QA test I was testing the moodle upgrade and was passed: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDLQA-8682

The theme used was Adaptable.

This error usually means the moodledata folder has not access permissions. Adaptable and many other themes saves internal images in moodledata: logo, favicon, slideshow, ...

Verify moodledata has permissions 0777.

Jose, if you can see images and icons means that moodle can't open the folder where these files are located. So this is a permissions issue.

The InfoBox colours where hardcoded in the past so I guess you are using an old  version.

Thanks Mary for your answer,

for example when I paste this code in a marketing block :

<div style="text-align:center; background: #e6e6e6; height: 240px; padding: 7px;">

    <i class="fa fa-paint-brush fa-5x" style="color: #009688;"></i>

    <h3>Title </h3>

    <div style="text-align:center;">Add your text here.</div>

</div>

Then I save changes, and it's turn to :

<div style="text-align: center; background: #e6e6e6; height: 240px; padding: 7px;">
<h3>Title</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">Add your text here.</div>
</div>

All the line disappears and don't stay in the box :

    <i class="fa fa-paint-brush fa-5x" style="color: #009688;"></i>

I did not have this issue with Atto

Well given that there are no Font Awesome fonts in Moodle the code here works OK and adds an icon albeit a Bootstrap glyphicon but it using the same <i></I> tag.
I use TimyMCE so not sure what you are using.
Also contrary to what you say about ATTO, I found that ATTO does mess with the HTML tags

As Mary said this is really strange because TinyMCE works well with HTML tags while Atto no.

So NEVER USE ATTO to insert HTML tags.

And this is a general advice to everybody that want to insert directly HTML code using the editor.

the issue related is when I use TimyMCE instead of ATTO like recommanded by Fernando.

I go back and forth.  It has cost me though.

I went into my marketing blocks which I had created a span in so that the whole block became a link with the wrong editor (TinyMCE that time) and ended up having to create them from scratch again.  Very annoying!

It would be nice if they would both play nice with HTML!

Hi Emma,

Could you test this out for me as I think the problem is an Adaptable setting for HTML configuration problem and not particularly the TinyMCE editor.

  1. Ensure that TinyMCE is your preffered Editor
  2. GOTO Dashboard and enable editing
  3. Using ADD BLOCK add an HTML block
  4. In the HTML section add <i class="fa fa-coffee fa-5x"></i> to the Content area of this block
  5. Save and display

Tell me if it works?

Now I struggle for another problem. I found overlapping with the responsiveness (much more blatant on mobile device...) in the login section and I did not find where to custom the form with CSS (or it did not work).

Hope there is a solution to fix the overlapping in the form.

Cheers,

Niko

Re: [ADAPTABLE] CONFIGUTATION PROBLEMS DISCUSSION > Custom Logo src?

by Niko Niko -

Ok,

I figured how to fix the problem, by modifying the custom css and javascript section with a proper class name.

Raw Code:

@media screen and (max-width: 1224px){

.form-label label {
    font-size: 11px;
}
}

Cheers.

P.S.: BRILLANT THEME and easily to customize!

This issue happens in other languages than english and it is a moodle issue.

In my opinion, the label should be above the box, not beside.

Hi Ivan,

If I understand how runs the theme, you can arrange the blocks :

- on several rows below the marketing blocks (with different arrangements on the row)

- on the right of the courses blocs,

- in the footer for administrators

perhaps more... I dont know  thoughtful

It depends where you want to add the blocks. Normaly there are blocks on the left and the right of the page, but in some places there are blocks on the left side only.

As the Adaptable description says:

"Adaptable is a highly customisable responsive two column moodle theme based on the popular BCU theme ..."

So it only has 2 columns. You can select the blocks column in the Layout section.

We are working to display 3 columns in the course page in the future.

Hi,

Thanks you so much for Adaptable theme and for your support.  I want to use Adaptable because of all the wonderful custom settings options. (  maybe not a good thing for a beginner like me)

As I said I'm a newbie this why I'm not sure that my problem has something to do with Adaptable so forgive me if I'm missing something but I'm googling and searching in moodle forums and docs for two days but I couldn't find any answers... So maybe you can help me shy

My setup:

Moodle 3.1.1 on Wamp server ( localhost)

Adaptable 2016052900   Release 1.2.3

The problem:

In my site I have to use Turkish characters ( Ğ ğ Ü ü İ i I ı Ç ç Ö ö ) and I want to use the google font (pic1). So I check the font on Google's page and then change the font setting in theme (pic2)  and... the special character are displayed with open sans ( or a default font which displays those char) (pic3). I 've read few post talking about UTF8 so I tried to check my database collation which is set to UTF8_turkish-ci. I've also installed the TR language pack... But nothing, I don't know what to do...

Pic 3 - The result: ( same result in any page, label etc.. using a different font than open sans )

Did you test the same font with English?

As far I can see Holtwood doesn't support Turkish language. Not all the Google fonts support all the language characters.

Verify first that the font selected support your language:

Hi Fernando ! Thank you so much for your answer.

I'm so sorry to disturb you. Yes you are right it was simply because Latin-Ext is not supported with Holtwood.

My mistake (as a newbie, I can only suppose ):

I was looking at google font on my browser... but my windows 10 is a Turkish version this is maybe why I was able to display the Turkish characters with Hotlwood on google font's site  (pic1 in my previous post).

While runing Moodle under Wamp  I suppose that the "code" wanted to download latin-ext of the font... so nothing for Holtwood .

+ I realized that Explorer can display the character correctly if I install the font in windows, but not Chrome or Firefox who are (maybe) looking to download the latin-ext subsets.

What I have learned:

I will never forget to filter fonts on google fonts under search>Languages>latin extended so l can be sure to choose a font that does support Turkish character ! ( unfortunately this is not 100% working : Chango font support Latin_ext but don't display Turkish character ... maybe I'm wrong but for me it is like this )

What I'm still wondering ( and I will try to figure out before asking in the forum ):

In adaptable I have to choose the font from a dropdown menu where we don't have all the font that exist on google's font page. Is it a selection of the font we can use ?  Or the list is not up to date ? Can we add a google font  with custom CSS?  Finally can we import a custom font ( not google's ) in adaptable and how.

Thank you for Adaptable and even more for your support !

I hope that I will be able to help somebody one day smile

Hi,

thanks for sharing this awesome theme, it's brilliant!

This might be a really obvious question, but usually in moodle I have the option to increase the number of possible responses to a question from four up to about ten, but I don't seem to have the button to do that when I use adaptable.

I'm a newbie, and I haven't attempted coding in HTML since 1995, so please be gentle with me if I've made a stooopid mistake smile

thanks

Marc

Please, post moodle and Adaptable version.

What type of question are you trying to use?

Did you test it with other themes?
