I am a newbie to Moodle so this is a very basic question.
If I enrol a group of students using the manual or self-registration option, how do I assign a group password or is an individual password better practice?

Individual passwords, always. Typically, kids will share their passwords or only use one or two passwords for all their accounts which their friends will know or work out, so there is no point in assigning a password. If uploading new users with a flat file, use the password "changeme", this gives the user the opportunity to change their password as the first thing they do in Moodle.
