I've developed a new 'message provider' for the forum module, which allows the Moodle message API to differentiate between posts to news forums and 'normal' (non-news) forum posts.
This will enable users to set different messaging preferences for the different types of posts, e.g. they may wish to set news posts (which are more likely to be urgent or time-sensitive) to be sent as email notifications, without necessarily having to have all other forum notifications delivered in the same way. I've attached a screen shot showing how the forum section of the messaging preferences page looks after the change.
