MAXIMA Server

Hi,

for our e-learning plattform we'd like

to use the STACK-Plugin and therefore need to install

a MAXIMA server.

Can you give me recommendations concerned with MAXIMA?

I have a virtual instance on our server, I can put any linux

flavour on. I prefer debian ... is it advantegous to

use CentOS ?

Can I start with installing MAXIMA with my package

manager (e.g. apt-get install maxima) or is it better

to download maxima and compile it manually ?

Are there installing manuals available ?

What are common pit falls, things to consider

with regard to STACK ?

Looking forward for your answers!

Greets &  Thanks,

Matti

Hello Matti,

I do not think that using the package manager to install is a problem as long as it is a  version of maxima supported by STACK. If you use use CENTOS, the only package in the repos is 5.23.2 which is maintained for legacy reasons and has some problems. You can compile from source, but you may be better off using a distribution with more recent support for maxima. Currently, STACK supports up to version 5.36.1.

Thanks Daniel,

I recommend using Maxima 5.36.1.  Please don't use a more recent version.  Versions 5.37.x (x=0,1,2,3) have a change in behaviour which causes a (minor & isolated) bug in the STACK libraries.  The Maxima developers have very kindly reverted the behaviour to accommodate us, and when a new version is available I'll test this and update the docs accordingly.

Thanks to you all!

... as I can see debian delivers MAXIMA Version 5.2.7.0-3.

So according to what you say, that will do in the beginning.

Thx for the time being ... If you can recommend info- or

tutorial sites in the web  please let me know.

Stay tuned!

Matti

It appears that Debian 7 (Wheezy) has maxima 5.27.0 and Debian 8 (Jessie) has maxima 5.34.1. Either should be okay with STACK at the moment. However, the beta Debian 9 (Stretch) has 5.37.0 which would have bugs.

Noted Daniel,

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll try and include a patch in STACK to over-write the problem functions in 5.37.0 to ensure we have STACK working with all versions which are distributed.  I'll post here in due course.
