First off, thanks for the great job that you and Helen did on the course. When you look at the numbers, it shows just what is possible through Moodle with good preparation and good moderators.
My main point is regarding the deadline, and although I think that whatever you do, there will always be some people who overlook it, I had an idea which might help. As it stands, you can have an activity with a deadline, but it doesn't stand out particularly.
I can set a deadline for the upload of the presentation, I can show the description, and I can even add a label, but ultimately it doesn't really stand out.
But if through formatting, it could be highlighted like this:
it would be much clearer.
This ought to be a toggle (maybe a checkbox in the availability section). I don't think it would be a good idea to make it automatic, as in courses with lots of assignments or quizzes it would lose its impact, but it would allow the teacher/course creator to highlight the really important deadlines. The above is just an illustration - I haven't actually created this, and I wouldn't know where to start. For the same reason I haven't posted the idea in Moodle Tracker, but someone with more knowledge than me might be able to assess how practicable that is.
All the best
