I developed a nice little preset for the database module that mimics flashcards. You can use photos, text, even embed Youtube videos. There are two buttons: Toggle Flip & Random Card. The random card will shuffle the deck so to speak.
Anyways, I am sharing it here for you guys. Download is listed.
I actually got the idea to build this from your twitter post. You put a picture from a Moodle Moot where they used the Database Activity to make digital postcards. I started down the road of doing a nice postcard type activity and quickly veered over to the flashcard idea.
I stumbled across this simple tutorial and started playing with a CSS only flashcard idea: https://davidwalsh.name/demo/css-flip.php
Thanks for the work you do here on Moodle. Your tweet brought this about.
Thank you very much for your sharing, it is really nice.
I tested it on Moodle2.6 and Moodle3.02.
Only one button is different with your Video guide, no 'Random card' button.
And the 'View Single' shows the page number, see the screenshot below:
Any other thing we have to do to make the preset works like your demo?
Thank you again.
He had to identify certain elements of the page structure to find the pagination generated by the database activity. Some were specific to the Pioneer Theme that we use which is why the button isn't appearing for your setup.
He said he was going to work on a better solution. I'll post when we have something.
The latest version can be downloaded from the official repository at Moodle.net
Please try it out and let me know what you think. I also attached a version here but any future updates will be at the hub.
I recently came across this database preset and have found it quite useful. Thank you!
However, on Moodle 3.2 it works fine with the non-Boost-related themes such as Adaptable and Essential but only shows the "Flip" button for the Boost-related themes.
As I'm planning to switch to Fordson, I was wondering if it was possible for the database present to be modified to work with these themes?
If that was possible it would be greatly appreciated.
This is fascinating! I love the idea and thank you for creating this. I downloaded it but then realized I don't know how to install it! I am the administrator for our Moodle site, but am still very new at all this.
Can you give me tips on how to install it to my moodle site?
Here is a video showing you how to use the database preset:
Be sure to get the latest version from Moodle.net
This is where I will publish any improvements.
This is absolutely terrific. Now for the next challenge. Instead of opening to "View list", we'd like it to open directly to "View single". This would simplify the use of this wonderful tool.
How can we set the default for the activity so that it opens directly to "View single" for the students?
1. Drag down your Database activity to the last section
2. Reduce section number to make the last section orphaned.
3. Create an URL resources in a section like this:
Then, when a user click on the link, it opens Single View straightaway.
Great idea. I can see this being used for many things. We've also written the code to allow for the FlashCards to be shown into Single view. I've written up both ways to accomplish this on my personal blog: http://troypatterson.me/2016/04/29/moodle-flashcard-update/
Thanks much William.
Enjoy reading your blog, especially this page:
p.s. This page is very interesting as well:
However, I now truly appreciate fresh, clean air. I love seeing the blue sky. Breathing in deeply is a pleasure. Fresh, clean water that one can drink straight from the faucet is now a joy in life.
I also truly, truly appreciate rest rooms with soap. And hand towels (or hand dryers). And toilet paper.
