Hello Mark,

You can change the grade display to use letters quite easily.

From the course go to the administration block and then [Course administration > Grades]

Then once again in the administration block [Grade administration > Course grade settings] (on Moodle 2.7) [Grade administration > Settings > Course grade settings] in 3.0.

Go to the section 'Grade item settings' and change 'Grade display type' to 'Letter'.

You can edit the letter scale by going to [Grade administration > Letters] and following the 'Edit grade letters' link.

I hope that helps.

Mark,

There is a default setting that you can choose one of the three (real, letter, percentage), or a pair with the second in parentheses, but each individual item/category can also be displayed in any of the 9 options by clicking the item/category settings in Gradebook Setup.

Mark
