Regarding the bit in the documentation about resetting the username and email address, this isn't necessary if you only want to retrieve work, and the student doesn't need to log in any more.

(When an account is deleted, the username and email address are changed by appending a random string of characters to them, so that a new account can be created with the username and/or email address. If the student does need to log in again, you can reset their username and email address by deleting the random string of characters.)
