I thought this might be interesting for some people, as the subject of sliders and front pages crops up from time to time.
I wanted to make a front page that wasn't quite so "Moodly" in appearance and have had a couple of attempts with minimal success as I'm really not a css expert. Over the weekend I put together the following using two Generico filters (housing some Bootstrap elements) and a couple of small changes to the site css.
The theme is Morecandy operating on Moodle 2.9, and I had some trouble getting things like full width involved quite a lot of changes which had a knock on effect with the rest of the site, but by using the Generico filter I was able to keep the changes contained to that instance.
You can see the working version here. There is no guest access to the site, but everything else works as before.
It was all done with code snippets from the web (mostly from w3schools) and a couple of posts from the forums here. Irrespective of whether you like it or not, it might give you some ideas as to the extent that you can change things with very little knowledge and a bit of perseverance!
If people are interested, I can post the code here so that they can play with it themselves.
All the best
