Ideal Server Specs

Hello, Moodle community!

I know this is a tricky question that has been asked many times, but I need to know what to ask for in a proposal to the powers that be in my organization.  We are in the research phase of finding a new LMS and I would like to bring Moodle to the table as an option.  So, here is my question:  What are the ideal specs for a Moodle server?  We will have about 100 users logging in at any one time.  We will be using quizzes, discussion boards, etc.

Thank you all in advance!

For that load a VPS should be sufficient. If you are familiar with the Unix command line or have the capacity to invest on it, with a Linux (virtual) server with shell access you'll be much happier in the long run.

I have around 100-150 users per semester in my courses.  Maybe 20-40 might be logged in at any one point in time.  My server is a 2GB RAM 60GB disk GoDaddy Linux VPS, and it runs fine.  I pay around $250/year US for this (on sale, of course).  There are other companies to buy from (I have no affiliation with GoDaddy).  My GoDaddy VPS has extremely high uptime (two downtime problems in around 4 years.)  Don't expect any Moodle support from GoDaddy, you are on your own.  I am not a network systems administrator or anything like that, I am just a professor seeking the best LMS for my students.

Oh, yes, having mentioned VPS, the next question is which one?

- From the FAQ: https://docs.moodle.org/en/Performance_FAQ#What_hosting_provider_do_you_recommend.3F

- Search in the Advanced search https://moodle.org/mod/forum/search.php?search=&id=5 for similar discussions

Almost forgot, my take on GoDaddy: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=193106

Take your budget and split it in two (web and db server). Now go and buy the two best servers you can with that. smile

Two dedicated servers running 24x7 for "about 100 users logging in at any one time" cooking the environment?
