The release of Moodle 3 1/3 brings a new core shoestrap theme and the incorporation of badges linked to the new Motivations subsystem. The Motivations subsystem is complementary to the existing outcomes system. Outcomes is a teacher/management centred system whereas Motivations is a more student centred scaffold where the “prize” or goal is decided through social constructivist interaction on a peer to peer basis (Vygotsky, Jagger Richards Watts). Learners get to pursue what they really want rather than bowing to the Organisational Hegemony of the teacher lead approach. This acknowledges that learners have multiple intelligences and the learning path needs to be automatically customised to individual learning styles.
At the back end we utilised a JFDI methodology which is a break from our normal agile approach. During the startup phase we dismissed Ruby on Rails, Groovy, Grails and Roo as the resulting system requirements would be beyond many off the shelf hosting packages.
