The complicated answer is that each module is notified of the deletion and does it's own cleanup.
The short answer would be, "yes".
Regarding deleting *any* files - they are not deleted immediately. This is done by a cleanup task later on (sometimes days later on). So, if your actual question is "why hasn't my disk usage reduced after I delete stuff?" then that's why!
