Send a message with an attachment to a student

As a teacher I want to reply privately to a student that sent me a private text message through moodle... but i want to reply the student with an attachment. It seems Moodle messages module doesn't support attachments, right?

What do you advice me to do? (i'm open to every solution, except using external tools. I may consider using non core moodle modules...)

Thanks!

Hi,

What do you think about this plugin?

Vote for the tracker item here: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-22077

There is one other hack/kludge.  Groups with one person in them.  The official view is that this is not well regarded by MoodleHQ.  https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-47161 The better way is to see private replies as an option as above.

Domenico is also right, the dialogue module is a possibility.

Hi Derek,

I did vote for the tracker you mentioned. That would be a great solution.

Hacks may not be the best choice... we have courses with hundreds of students, and those kind of hacks may get messy... Anyway, I love to know all kind of workarounds smile

Thanks,
susana

Hi Dom,
yes, we will consider dialog...
We try not to introduce too many contrib modules... but we will test this one.

Thank you for your input!

The Quickmail plugin supports multiple attachments - although development appears to have stopped at Moodle 2.7 ?

https://moodle.org/plugins/view/block_quickmail

Might be a solution for you ?

Hi Stuart,

Yes, I was thinking about quickmail... But it seems something too heavy for our present need (sharing attachments to messages)...
Thanks for your input, and thank you for warning that development has stopped at Moodle 2.7...

best,
susana

Solution 1:

Create an offline assignment (which doesn't require student to submit), drop you file into 'Feedback files' area and add your message to 'Feedback comments' area, Notify students=Yes

Solution 2:

Users > Groups > Auto-create groups >

Then create a separate forum. Now you can have a private chat with individual student and take the full features of a forum.

Hi William,

Solution 1 seems simple.. the problem is that we don't use those kind of assignments...
Solution 2 seems a little too messy when you have hundreds of students.

Very creative! smile

Thank you!

Hi Susana,

I suggest to upload the attachment as a file into the course where the student is enrolled, assuming that the attachment is not private, only the message. Then, write your message and add the link to the file in your message text. If, however, the attachment is also considered private, then I suggest to use a cloud storage like Dropbox or OneDrive etc. and add the link to your message.

With kind regards,

Hartmut
