Installing and upgrading help

I am have installed moodle at http://ylit.org/moodle. Moodle was installed by a script provided by my web host. I am currently getting this error message: Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/ylit/public_html/moodle/lib/adodb/adodb.inc.php on line 1. I was getting this message: Notice: Only variable references should be returned by referenced in /home/ylit/public_html/moodle/lib/adodb/adodb.inc.php on line 2548.

I made changes to the adodb.inc.php file as noted in the forum here, but when I loaded www.ylit.org/moodle I get the Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/ylit/public_html/moodle/lib/adodb/adodb.inc.php on line 1 message.

I looked through many forums, but I did not see a similar issue. I checked my config.php file. It looks like it is ok, and my data base seems to be ok. All of this was set up via my webhost script.

Any ideas?
