the number of grade calculators (https://docs.moodle.org/29/en/Grade_calculations ) within the course is currently one ?
Would be good to have several grade calculators for groups in the course.

I believe that what you are asking for can be accomplished by existing functionality. Use Exclude Empty Grades and restrict access to the assignments for the various groupings.
